It's hard to believe that it's been 50 years since Neil Armstrong first set foot on man's most popular cultural metaphor. But he did, and it put into motion a wonderful world of computer and video games that you can still enjoy today. Since the dawn of mankind, humans have been looking up at the moon and thinking of ways to create video games set there. Hence the reason for the Apollo missions in the 1960s and '70s—to provide cultural fodder for a wide variety of electronic entertainment experiences that would thrill children and adults alike for decades to come. So let's take a look at some of the greatest moon-based games of all time. I'm not talking about games with variations of "moon" in the title that don't have much to do with the actual moon as a setting—i.e. Harvest Moon, Pokémon: Moon, Sailor Moon, the Lunar series. No, we're talking about games that take place on or around the Earth's moon itself. This is serious scientific business. I propose that July 20 should be a worldwide holiday: Discovery Day. While you're celebrating mankind's greatest technological achievement this summer, sit back, pour yourself a glass of moon-nog, and try a few of these classics, which will no doubt help ring in the festive spirit of discovery.
