Samsung will introduce the 'Galaxy Z Flip' next month, according to insider Ice Universe. It'll serve as the South Korean company's initial flagship foldable phone in 2020. As for the design, reports suggest the Galaxy Z Flip will offer a clamshell-style layout. Samsung will insert a secondary display on the outside to run notifications at a glance, but the Galaxy Z Flip opens into a traditional form factor resembling modern smartphones. The design might sport next-generation display technology, too. Last month, Ice Universe reported that Samsung's research and development division had completed an ultra-thin glass cover capable of bending. Foldable phones normally ship with plastic-based screens, but they're highly susceptible to scratches and other issues that reduce longevity. Samsung could instead roll out an industry-first flexible glass that both bends and remains durable. Now, there might be some appeal in purchasing a foldable phone if it's more compact than a standard slate-style smartphone but just as resistant to knocks and drops. Ice Universe didn't explain why Samsung has ditched the Galaxy Fold in name and design. However, it could have a lot to do with its status in the market. The Galaxy Fold finally arrived after several delays and defects. Pricing struck the industry as a concern, too. Samsung estimates it has sold less than 500,000 units, largely due to its near-$2,000 price tag. By altering its appearance and drastically reducing the starting price to around $1,000, the Galaxy Z Flip could attract average consumers rather than risk-taking tech nerds only. Previously, it appeared 'Galaxy Fold 2' or 'Galaxy Bloom' would get used as its final name. The latter, though, will likely turn out as the Galaxy Z Flip's internal codename. Samsung uses these codenames behind closed doors to avoid leaks, but they often occur anyway. We'll see the Galaxy S11 and the Galaxy Z Flip at Samsung's Unpacked event on February 11. Release dates are still unknown, but both smartphones should go on sale shortly after they're official. In addition, it wouldn't be surprising if Samsung rolled out new wireless earbuds or even a smartwatch to pair with them. So expect plenty of fresh hardware at this upcoming Unpacked event.
