((Image: Pixabay)) The next generation of games consoles may be only a few months away, but the latest financial results from Sony reveal gamers continue to purchase millions of PlayStation 4.As VentureBeat reports, Sony has managed to sell 112.3 million PS4 consoles over its lifetime and there's still quite a bit of life in the aging hardware yet. To give you some idea of how well the PS4 continues to sell, Sony last reported the total back in May, at which point 110.4 million had been sold. Sales will surely slow considerably as we near the PS5 launch date, but it seems likely the PS4 total will surpass 115 million before the end of its life.In the best-selling games consoles list, the PS4 has moved into a comfortable second place behind the PS2, which managed a staggering 155 million sales. In third place is the original PlayStation with 102.49 million. Nintendo is present in the charts above the PS4, but only if you count handheld hardware. The Nintendo DS achieved 154.02 million, while the Game Boy and Game Boy Color combined reached 118.69 million. The PS4 may eventually top that depending on how 2021 pans out. It's a very different story for Microsoft. The company's best performing games console remains the Xbox 360 with 86 million sales. The Xbox One has performed relatively poorly and Microsoft decided a few years ago to stop reporting sales figures. The latest estimates put the installed based at roughly 50 million. Microsoft also recently took the decision to stop manufacturing the Xbox One X and Xbox One S Digital Edition. That's in stark contrast to Sony, which has a robot assembling a PS4 every 30 seconds.
