Comcast today said its ultra-fast gigabit internet service is now available to "nearly all" of the 58 million homes and businesses in its service area, which covers 39 states and Washington, D.C. The deployment, which kicked off 19 months ago, "represents the fastest rollout of gigabit speeds to the most homes in the country," according to Comcast. The company's residential Xfinity Gigabit Internet service uses network connections that are already in most customers' homes to simplify installation. "We've been able to do this without having to dig up flower beds and pull new wires into people's homes," Eric Schaefer, Comcast's SVP and General Manager of broadband, automation, and communications, told PCMag today. Comcast did not specify how many of its Xfinity Internet customers have signed up for gigabit service, but said 75 percent currently get speeds of 100 megabits per second or higher. Residential broadband customers can monitor and manage Wi-Fi-connected devices in their homes via Comcast's Xfinity xFi digital dashboard. From the dashboard, you can see all the devices on your home network, assign them to profiles for easy management, change the network name and password, pause Wi-Fi access for any device, and set limits for kids' Wi-Fi usage. Comcast also offers xFi Pods, small devices that plug into power outlets to expand your home's Wi-Fi to hard-to-reach areas.
