Terms of use. Game of Thrones returns Sunday, April 14 for its eighth and final season. Since 2011, fans of the show have watched their favorite characters jockey for power and try to stay alive in Westeros. Now, with the Starks and Targaryens allied, they might finally have the strength to take the throne from the Lannisters and save the realm from the White Walkers. There are just six episodes to go before this epic story, based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, comes to an end. Though HBO has multiple prequel series in the works, it'll be some time before any of them even get a release date. That means fans will have to look elsewhere for their fix of epic fantasy world political thrillers. The good news is that there are a few shows available to stream right now that can scratch that Game of Thrones itch. Britannia (Amazon Prime Video) Britannia is an Amazon Prime original that depicts the Roman conquest of Britain in 43 AD. The nine-part series is billed as a historical fantasy with Celtic warrior women and powerful druids working together to fight off the advancing Roman army. The series stars Kelly Reilly, David Morrissey, Zoë Wanamaker, and Mackenzie Crook. Black Sails (Starz) Black Sails is an interesting production because it's billed as a historical adventure series and a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. It's set on New Providence Island during the Golden Age of Piracy, and depicts the trials and tribulations of captaining a ship on the high seas. Fictional characters like Captain Flint, Long John Silver, and Billy Bones appear alongside real-life pirates like Blackbeard, Jack Rackham, and others. All four seasons are available to watch on Starz, which is available as a standalone service or an Amazon Prime add-on. The Borgias (Showtime, Netflix) The Borgias is a historical-fiction drama series about the powerful Borgia family during the Italian Renaissance in the 16th century. Watch it on Showtime or Netflix. Frontier (Netflix) Frontier, from Discovery Canada and Netflix, chronicles political intrigue in the North American fur trade in 18th century Canada. Jason Momoa is Declan Harp, an outlaw looking to topple the Hudson's Bay Company's monopoly. Stream all three seasons on Netflix. Into the Badlands (Netflix) Into the Badlands is set in a post-apocalyptic feudal world where warriors are trained to defend their master's subjects and land. Here, society has moved away from guns, so there's a lot of martial arts action. Currently airing on AMC, Netflix subscribers can stream the first two seasons. The Last Kingdom (Netflix) Based on Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories series of novels, The Last Kingdom follows Saxon warrior Uhtred of Bebbanburg, who is taken as a slave by Dane invaders and grows up among them. After airing on BBC America for the first two seasons, The Last Kingdom moved to Netflix for season three, with a fourth on the way. Medici (Netflix) Starring Dustin Hoffman, Richard "Red Wedding" Madden, and Stuart Martin, Medici: Masters of Florence tells the story of how Cosimo de' Medici comes to be elected as the leader of Florence and inheritor of the Bank of Medici in 15th century Florence. Westworld (HBO) Another HBO production, Westworld is classified as a science-fiction western, and depicts a high-tech amusement park for adults, who can have their way with the park's robot inhabitants.
