pcmag.comBYOD Devices Aren't Always Managed by IT Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) is a practice in which employees buy and use their personal smartphones and devices for work. It is common in businesses of all sizes because it just makes sense. Employees choose devices that they enjoy using as both their personal and work device. The disadvantage of the BYOD practice, though, is that there's no uniformity from an IT department's perspective. Employees in any company can be using a variety of devices on different platforms and running different versions of software and apps. While IT departments can use MDM solutions, this doesn't solve issues and problems specific to particular smartphone hardware, operating systems (OSes), or individual apps. This puts the onus on employees to solve any issues or problems they may be experiencing. Left to their own devices (no pun intended), most employees will likely turn to the device manufacturer for service and support.B2M Solutions' Lee said that awareness is the first step in tackling enterprise mobility issues. "CIOs and CEOs need to be aware that [mobile devices] are business-critical IT assets," he said. "Next, they need to find tools that can give them a real-time view of these issues so that they can spot problems and fix them quickly."Companies such as B2M Solutions offer software and services that can track and analyze mobile issues. "Our prodigy solution can process upwards of six billion real-time mobile events a month," Lee said. "This is everything from devices rebooting, devices having a battery issue, and even devices losing connectivity."Tracking mobile devices' service issue data is a good first step. Then applying machine learning (ML) to the data and exporting it to business intelligence (BI) tools can give businesses a greater understanding about how to solve these issues.Have any questions you need answered about enterprise mobility?
