Instagram knows that you're taking a look at TikTok, and it doesn't want to let you get away without trying some new features. Duo, Echo, and SlowMo. In its latest rollout, the Facebook-owned platform unleashed a trio of fresh Boomerang effects. None of them alter Boomerang's ability to capture reversible clips, but Instagram describes these as "creative twists" in an era when creators are demanding more freedom than ever. Now, it'll remain up to creators to take advantage of them and perhaps distribute viral content rivaling what's on TikTok. The new Boomerang effects aren't all that complex, though. Duo rewinds a clip with a "glitchy, digitized look" while also adding faster play and rewind speeds. Meanwhile, Echo inserts a motion blur that includes a translucent trail following any moving object. As for SlowMo, it cuts a clip's speed in half so they play for two seconds in each direction. Additionally, the update features a clip-cutting tool. Users can trim a Boomerang to edit its length. "Your Instagram camera gives you ways to express yourself and easily share what you're doing, thinking or feeling with your friends," an Instagram spokesperson told TechCrunch. "Boomerang is one of the most beloved camera formats and we're excited to expand the creative ways that you can use Boomerang to turn everyday moments into something fun and unexpected." TikTok goes much further with its toolkit. ByteDance's platform, which has been under fire in the United States recently, matches Instagram's Boomerang effects and presents its users with many more. Viral content surfaces regularly due to TikTok's wide range of features. Its users can trim and splice clips, and effects add unique creative touches. Maybe that'll be possible for Instagram, but it does feel like more effects are needed. Users around the world can take advantage of the new Boomerang effects today. Both iOS and Android versions appear to offer them globally. Just check that you're on the latest software build for either app, and the new Boomerang effects should be available.
