TikTok discovered an entire generation that'll churn out viral content at a rapid pace, and other social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter also cater to shortened clips rather than long-form programming. Yet they weren't the first to master this area. Vine debuted with a promise to deliver six-second looping videos, but monetization barely existed on the platform and led to its demise. Now, more than three years after shutting down, it's returning in the form of Byte. In a surprise announcement on Friday, Vine co-founder Dom Hofmann announced the Byte app's arrival on iOS and Android. Hofmann, who left Vine shortly after Twitter's deal to acquire it, had been developing Byte for several years. In fact, the most recent official word from him indicated the app would launch last spring. Without any significant funding, Hofmann and his small team took the 'slow and steady' approach. Finally, it's here. Six-second looping videos are back. Byte takes Vine's best features and simply repackages them under a fresh identity. Users can upload directly from their camera roll, or Byte will offer its in-house camera to capture moments. That's all, really. Human editors, meanwhile, are on-hand to pick videos that deserve some extra attention. Additionally, a discover feed will recommend content based on likes. Byte wants to highlight an array of "personalities, voices, and moments." Overall, it sounds like a complete experience. So it comes down to Byte's ability to attract users sharing viral content and letting them monetize effectively. TechCrunch sat down with Hofmann to discuss Byte's strategy, and he revealed an ad revenue split between the company and its top creators. Byte also plans on directly compensating them. In the coming months, Byte will introduce a pilot program with details. Right now, Hofmann and Byte's team are dedicated to perfecting the app's performance across mobile devices around the world. Byte is available in Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store today. Since it's fresh out of beta, don't be surprised if some features experience hiccups.
