computerworld.comIs the smartphone industry stagnant? The answer is a resounding “Sort of.”The trouble is that most of the smartphone innovation these days doesn’t enable the user to actually do anything different. Breathtaking new technology merely allows the same old usage models - slightly faster or “better.”The phones change. But the way we use them doesn’t.Innovation these days seems to be all about thinner bezels, or face authentication. Which is impressive from a technology standpoint. But these aren’t features that fundamentally change how we interact with our devices.New cameras give us incredibly advanced technology, and pictures that are slightly better than previous models. To read this article in full, please click here...

computerworld.comA small boost in Windows 10's user share over the last several months is likely a signal that businesses have finally begun migrating to the new operating system, an analysis of new data shows.Data published yesterday by California-based Net Applications said that Windows 10 actually slipped two-tenths of a percentage point in user share - the portion of all personal computer owners who ran the operating system - during February, ending the month powering 34.1% of the world's PCs and 38.9% of all systems running an edition of Microsoft's OS. (The second number is larger than the first because Windows accounted for 87.7% of all operating systems, not 100%.)To read this article in full, please click here...

computerworld.comWant Windows 10 to run faster? We've got help. Take a few minutes to try out these tips, and your machine will be zippier and less prone to performance and system issues.1. Change your power settings If you’re using Windows 10’s Power saver plan, you’re slowing down your PC. That plan reduces your PC’s performance in order to save energy. (Even desktop PCs typically have a Power saver plan.) Changing your power plan from Power saver to High performance or Balanced will give you an instant performance boost. To do it, launch Control Panel, then select Hardware and Sound > Power Options. You’ll typically see two options: Balanced (recommended) and Power saver. (Depending on your make and model, you might see other plans here as well, including some branded by the manufacturer.) To see the High performance setting, click the down arrow by Show additional plans. To read this article in full, please click here...

computerworld.comIf you still think that operating systems are tied to hardware, you need to update your thinking; nowadays there are lots of options that let you run one operating system within another or in parallel to another. computerworld.comThis database analyst has handled his IT shop's SQL Servers for two decades, and he's very well respected, says an IT pilot fish on the inside."He has a masters degree in IT and many certifications, including SQL Server certification," fish says."Unfortunately, he's in his 60s and, though everyone eventually asks him for help in coding and many other projects, our new manager is younger by 20 years and seems to think he's past his prime."So it's no surprise when the manager hires a consultant to help move an extremely large database that's replicated globally.Consultant works for weeks detailing all the database's tables and looking at options. When he's finally ready, he calls a meeting to lay out his plan: The system will need to be down for an entire day to insure data is copied to the new server, and all the replicated sites will have to be down during this time, too.To read this article in full, please click here...

computerworld.comMicrosoft is less than two years away from becoming a browser afterthought, according to the newest data from analytics vendor Net Applications.Data published Thursday by the California-based company showed that the user share of Internet Explorer (IE) stood at 13.5% for February. That was an impressive 1.7 percentage point increase from the month prior and the highest, by far, since Net Applications revamped its tallies by eliminating bot-made traffic from the data.Even that increase was but a temporary reprieve from a depressing-to-Microsoft trend that has seen the browser shed an enormous amount of user share in the past several years. As recently as June 2015, before Microsoft launched Windows 10 and thus that OS's native browser, Edge, IE accounted for 54% of the world's browsers, and nearly 60% of those that ran on a Windows-powered personal computer. To read this article in full, please click here...

computerworld.comThe official start of spring is right around the corner, folks - and here in Android Land, that can mean only one thing: We're officially in the thick of it.Late February to early March is when most Android manufacturers start dusting off their superlative-generating garden gnomes and getting ready to launch their fanciest new flagships for the year. We saw the first signs of the season this week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, where Samsung unveiled its Galaxy S9, Sony touted its alphabet-soup-inspired Xperia XZ2 ("What should we name this thing, Jim?" "Uh...I don't know - throw a few letters and numbers together, oughta be fine"), and LG showed off its even more absurdly named LG V30S ThinQ (pronounced "thwonk," I think). To read this article in full, please click here...

computerworld.comIf there is one current conversation at Mobile World Congress that is going to have a profound impact on our daily life, it is expectation that the first "mobile broadband" 5G networks should begin launching from mid-2019. computerworld.comGoogle this week officially launched its Hangouts Chat app, the company’s take on the booming market for chat-based collaboration. Hangouts Chat functions much like other group chat tools such as Slack, which aim to reduce reliance on email and make it easier to communicate and share information with colleagues. Features include threaded conversations, searchable chats and an array of app integrations and chat bots.[ Related: Chat happens: Your guide to 8 group-chat services ] Google offered a first glimpse of Hangouts Chat almost a year ago when it announced plans to  separate its original Hangouts application into two products for G Suite subscribers. Alongside a video conferencing tool, Hangouts Meet, which was made available users immediately after the announcement, a text-based Chat app was only accessible via an early adopter program. To read this article in full, please click here...

computerworld.comSince its launch in 2014, Slack has become a popular tool for enterprise collaboration; it now has 6 million daily active users worldwide – around a third of whom are paying customers – and it continues to evolve to take on even more tasks.A good way to understand how ingrained Slack has become in offices is to consider the response when the collaboration platform gets knocked offline. A 45-minute outage in January became the top trending topic on Twitter in the U.S. as execs across the country wondered how they would communicate with colleagues two desks away.To read this article in full, please click here...

computerworld.comSupport pilot fish gets a call from a user complaining about a printer that has failed to print a job. "This isn't the first time this has happened," she tells fish. "It's an ongoing problem that's getting more and more frequent."Fish reruns the job so the user can continue working, then begins investigating possible causes. A quick look at common problems turns up nothing, so he calls her back to get more information. You said this was an ongoing problem, right? fish asks."Yes," she replies. "It can delay a shipment, so it's very important that we get this solved. We can reprint manually, but this keeps getting worse and we should figure out what's causing it."To read this article in full, please click here...
