computerworld.comFlashback to the days when this midsize tech vendor is selling turnkey business systems to lumberyards, and a pilot fish working there is about to get a new assignment."One day, my manager stopped by my desk with a handheld RF terminal," says fish. "He wanted me to write a program for it to do physical inventory for a customer. The device had a 4-line LCD display and a small alphanumeric keypad."I went into the computer room and connected the base unit to a serial port on our PDP-8 minicomputer. Then I took the handheld and checked the signal in various parts of the building."Turns out the signal range is about 200 feet, but there's a problem: The building's aluminum studs create dead spots where fish can't maintain a connection. To read this article in full, please click here...

computerworld.comWhen you dig around in Android history, you're bound to uncover some spectacular treasures. That's what happened to me while I was deep in the digital archives doing research for my recent story about Android versions. From the memory-jogging screenshots to the many forgotten milestones, I came across more buried gems than I could possibly squeeze into a single story. And you know what? Some of the nuggets that didn't end up fitting into the final piece were among the most amusing discoveries of all.So let's set the scene for a few standout examples: The year was 2009. Cupcake was the Android release o' the moment - the first Android version to sport a tasty-sounding name, not to mention an on-screen keyboard and then-revolutionary-seeming support for third-party widgets. To read this article in full, please click here...

computerworld.comMicrosoft’s multibillion-dollar Surface brand has taken many hits in its relatively short and sordid career, while customer support vacillated between inadequate and non-existent. Now, official posts on the Microsoft Answers Forum lend a ray of hope to those who have specific problems. It remains to be seen if the posts reflect a corporate change of heart, or if they’re just more of the same-old same-old.Last week I wrote about the apparent bug in the Win10 Fall Creators Update that makes some Surface Pens stop writing. computerworld.comMicrosoft last week rolled out another Windows 10 preview, a regular occurrence in its Insider program, that featured a handful of additions to the under-construction OS. One of those, called "Near Share," is a simple wireless service meant for impromptu file transfer between devices. The easiest way to pigeonhole Near Share is to think of it as Microsoft's belated doppelgänger of Apple's "AirDrop," the share service that debuted on Macs, iPhones and iPads six years ago.[ Further reading: Windows 10: A guide to the updates ]Although AirDrop is one of the most under-used tools in macOS and iOS, there's no reason Near Share has to follow suit on Windows 10. That's why Computerworld dug up information on the feature now, rather than wait for its debut next year.To read this article in full, please click here...
