pcmag.comVodafone is reportedly lukewarm on whether it'll sell ultrafast services via Openreach's new G.fast connections; it may instead prefer to concentrate on its Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) rollout with CityFibre. G.fast, said to be a halfway house between VDSL Fibre to the Cabinet and FTTP, can offer speeds in the region of 300-700Mbps and has been developed in BT's labs for several years now. It's currently being piloted in a number of trial locations across the country, but there’s currently no solid commercial launch date for G.fast. While a number of ISPs using the Openreach network are keen on selling G.fast, Vodafone - which currently sells ADSL and FTTC services via BT's access network - might not be one of them. Speaking to industry blog ISP Review, a Vodafone spokesperson said that there were "no firm plans" to get on the good ship G.fast, adding that it may be ready to launch its first FTTP - also known as Fibre to the Home - services later this year. The spokesperson said: "[G.fast] is something that we are evaluating it but have no firm plans to launch. Our main focus is on offering great value Fibre Broadband [i.e. Fibre to the Cabinet] today as well as working on the launch of Fibre to the Home (FTTH) later this year, which promises to provide a superior broadband experience for customers." Openreach currently aims to have passed 10 million addresses with G.fast by the end of 2020 and at least 2 million extra premises with FTTP by the same date. Last year, Vodafone announced that it’s working on launching FTTP services using CityFibre’s networks, which are currently live in over 40 UK cities. The Vodafone and CityFibre agreement means that while Vodafone will be the only ISP able to sell FTTP during the build phase of each local network, in time, other providers will be able to use the same infrastructure to sell gigabit FTTP to customers.
