pcmag.comThe long-awaited multiplayer update to turn-based strategy game The Battle of Polytopia landed on schedule, but due to server and time zone issues, not everyone with the Android version was able to get the update. While this led to developer Midjiwan having to pause the rollout of the Android version, this has now been fixed. If you're still waiting for the update to hit, keep checking Google Play for signs of life. In terms of how it all works, it seems as though it was worth the wait; multiplayer matches tested on Android (we played on a Huawei Mate 10 Pro) more or less worked like local multiplayer, with the pace of play largely determined by whoever you're playing against. It's not especially ideal for playing on commutes, especially if your bus or train goes under a bridge or through a tunnel, which caused us to lose a connection and redo a turn, but we're happy to report that the Android version a) exists and b) works. When you first start up the multiplayer mode, you're given a 15-digit code - players can use this to invite you to matches and vice versa; once you have enough people's codes, you can invite them to play one of two modes - Glory (first to 10,000 points) or Might (capture all capital cities) which are basically variations on the standard Perfection and Domination single player modes. Playing against human opponents does lend Polytopia a different edge. AI opponents can be quite predictable - for example, they'll attack a unit inside a city over others nearby, even if the unit in the city is stronger or less of an immediate threat. Human Polytopians are not so easy to fool; we've already seen people doing rushes with priests, something which, unless you have a lot of ranged units, is quite hard to counter. People are currently using the #playpolytopia tag to find other gamers on Twitter. We've played one on one matches, four player deathmatches and games against mixtures of AI and human opponents. While there's been a few bugs here and there (certain resources appearing where they shouldn't) now that the initial multiplayer groundwork has been done, fixes should come thick and fast.
