pcmag.comTired of saying "Hey Google" to your smart speaker all the time? Well, now you don't have to. On Thursday, Google introduced a new feature that'll let you continue your conversations with the company's smart speakers without needing to utter the activation phrase after every request. "We've heard from a lot of people that adding 'Hey Google' before each follow-up question for the Assistant doesn't feel as natural as they'd like," the company said in a blog post. To address the issue, Google created a new setting, which is designed to let you have back-and-forth conversations with its digital assistant software. The company unveiled it back in May at the Google I/O developer conference, and said the new feature can detect when you're speaking to the software, and when you're talking with someone else. The "Continued Conversation" function is first rolling out today for Google Home, Google Home Mini and Google Home Max. To activate it, go to your Google Assistant app, and enter Settings → Preferences → Continued Conversation and toggle it on. The feature doesn't entirely eliminate the need to say "Hey Google" or "OK Google" when using your smart speaker. To activate the digital assistant, you'll still need to utter either phrase. But after that, you can make follow-up requests, without having to say them again. To end a conversation, you can say "thank you" or "stop" or simply go silent. Google's blog post offered an example of how you might use the new setting. "Next time you wake up and the skies are grey, just ask 'Hey Google, what's the weather today?'... 'And what about tomorrow?'... 'Can you add a rain jacket to my shopping list'.. 'And remind me to bring an umbrella tomorrow morning'… 'Thank You.'" The company hasn't yet said when the feature will be available for other devices.
