One of the more secure alternatives to passwords that's taking off both for consumers and businesses is biometrics. Forget clunky password managers; biometrics are becoming faster, more secure, and best of all, you can't lose or forget them. The data from biological patterns is providing key insights into whether or not you are who you claim to be. This authentication could come from a retina scan, a palm vein infrared scan, or even an observation about your specific gait as you walk. Today, biometric authentication isn't only being deployed by businesses with deep pockets; it's also being used when accepting digital payments or identifying patients in a hospital, as well as in investigations by forensic scientists and first responders following a disaster. Research site ResearchandMarkets.com predicts there will be 2.6 billion biometric payment users by 2023, changing how we check out in retail stores and on e-commerce websites. Companies such as Mastercard have added fingerprint sensors to its biometric cards. The technology requires users to hold their finger on their card in order to authenticate it. Fingerprint recognition is becoming more common on smartphones, too, mainly to log in to applications. You can use it to log in to many banking systems, such as the ones from Bank of America, Capital One, and Wells Fargo. Customers at Target can also use fingerprint recognition to access their apps and scan products in the store for discounts. Companies such as Precise Biometrics are even moving beyond fingerprint recognition and incorporating multimodal biometrics, including facial, fingerprint, iris, and voice biometrics. On the business side, because biometric technology has not only advanced but also dropped in price, it's becoming a standard part of mainstream corporate identity management procedures. In the coming year, look for the following five biometric security trends and technologies to come out of development and start protecting mainstream users.
