More innovation is currently taking place in Massachusetts than any other US state, according to a new study from WalletHub. The personal finance website compared all 50 states and the District of Columbia "across 24 key indicators of innovation-friendliness," including their share of STEM professionals, share of technology companies, share of science and engineering graduates, and projected STEM job demand by 2020. WalletHub also factored each state's research and development spending per capita, venture-capital funding per capita, invention patents per capita, eighth-grade math and science performance, average internet speed, share of households with internet access, and more. Taking that all that into consideration, Massachusetts ranks as the most innovative state in the US. Microsoft's home state of Washington came in at number two, followed by the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Colorado. Home to such tech giants as Apple and Google, California currently ranks as the sixth most innovative state, according to WalletHub. Rounding out the top 10 were Virginia at No. 7, followed by Utah, Delaware, and Oregon. "Certain states deserve more credit than others for America's dominance in the tech era," WalletHub wrote. "These states continue to grow innovation through investments in education, research and business creation, especially in highly specialized industries." At the other end of the spectrum, Mississippi came in dead last, ranking as the least innovative state in the US, WalletHub found. Louisiana, West Virginia, Iowa, Tennessee, North Dakota, Hawaii, Kentucky, South Dakota, Nebraska, Arkansas, and Alabana were also at the bottom of the list.
