In addition to transcribing speech to text on your screen in real time, Google's Live Transcribe app will soon tell you when a dog is barking, someone is whistling, or knocking on the door. This new feature launches next month, along with the ability to copy and save transcripts generated by Live Transcribe. Introduced in February, the Live Transcribe app is designed to help individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing participate in conversations. It's free to download in the Google Play store on Android devices with 5.0 Lollipop and above. It's also pre-installed on the Pixel 3; enable it in the phone's Accessibility settings. When the update arrives next month, Live Transcribe will show "sound events" like dog barks and whistles in the bottom-left corner of the app. "Seeing sound events allows you to be more immersed in the non-conversation realm of audio and helps you understand what is happening in the world," Android Accessibility Product Manager Brian Kemler wrote in a blog post. "This is important to those who may not be able to hear non-speech audio cues such as clapping, laughter, music, applause, or the sound of a speeding vehicle whizzing by." Meanwhile, Kemler says the ability to copy and save transcripts will be helpful for not only the deaf and hard of hearing community, but also people who are learning a language as well as students and journalists, who can use it to take notes.
