Every year a new release beckons, and the iPhone continues to be one of the most expensive phones on the market. However, no matter the price, Apple still rules the UK phone market with its remarkable selection of handsets. Despite the cost, the sleek design and fashionably fast processors are hard to argue with in terms of usability. Apple compete with the likes of Samsung, Huawei, and Google, all of which can offer phones at great prices in the UK. But, die-hard fans aren't likely to divert away from their trusted brand. Apple announced the newest iPhone in October, 2018, and while these phones might be a bit on the pricey side it’s estimated that nearly half of all iPhone users will upgrade to the latest model. Considering we labelled it the “most beautiful iPhone ever” in our review, the low monthly cost will be an appealing option if you’re in the market for a new iPhone. It isn’t as expensive as the XS Max, and packs a little more punch than the more affordable XR. Although, technically, they are the same phone, but the XS Max is just that little bit bigger when it comes to screen size. The XS Max is the most expensive iPhone on offer, but there are still plenty of deals to choose from. Currently the iPhone X sits around the £40 - £50 mark for the 64GB. Those unconvinced by the buttons removal in later models may still flock to the high-performance phone for a number of years. You can pick up the iPhone 8 at a very reasonable price in 2019, with both O2 and EE pitching around the £30 mark for their contract offers. It’s incredibly easy to switch your phone number over to a new device. All you need is a PAC (Porting Authorisation Code) from your old network. Recent regulations from Ofcom now mean you can switch providers without having to call up your old network! All it takes is one text, here are the relevant steps: If you want to switch and keep your existing phone number text "PAC" to 65075 to begin the process Your existing provider will respond by text within a minute You will then receive the switching code (PAC), which will be valid for 30 days All provider's reply must also include important information about any early termination charges or pay-as-you-go credit balances Your PAC code can be handed to new provider, and the company must arrange for the switch to complete within one working day One in six people want to keep their mobile number when they switch. For those who don't, you can text "STAC" to 75075 to request a "service termination authorisation code" What size iPhone should I get? The XS Max is the big one, and the XS and XR are smaller, right? Well, you might think that, but alas, it’s not quite that simple. The XS Max is indeed the largest; approximately 158mm tall, 77mm wide and 8mm deep. Unsurprisingly, the XS’ proportions are very similar; it’s just as deep and a fraction narrower. The main difference is in height, where the XS is a centimetre smaller at around 144mm. Compared to the XS, though, the XR is a little bigger. It’s 150mm high, 76mm wide and 8mm deep. The differences might be miniscule, but before making any final decisions you should see the phones physically before making your final decision. As the old joke goes, if you think it’s too small to make a difference, try being locked in a closet with a mosquito. The best screen for a stream machine For something you’ll spend so much of your time looking at, your smartphone should have a nice screen, and top of the pile are the iPhone XS and the XS Max. Both XS versions have the same pixel density – 458 pixels per inch – even with the difference in size. The XS Max has a 2688 x 1242 pixel resolution for its 6.5-inch notched screen, while the XS has a 2436 x 1125 resolution for the its 5.8-inch display. The XR, meanwhile, has a comparatively modest display at 326 pixels per inch, but also has a smaller contrast ratio: 1400:1 instead of the claimed 1,000,000:1 on the XS models. This means that the difference between the brightest image and the darkest image that the XR can create won’t be as much as on the other handsets. It’s also worth noting that the XR has an LCD display instead of the OLED on the XS models, and won’t show HDR content to the same quality. If you mostly use your phone for scrolling through social media or playing games you might be okay with those sacrifices, but if you stream a lot of Netflix, YouTube or Amazon Prime Video on your smartphone you might be inclined to go for the better screen. Picture perfect The other vital difference between the XS and XR models is the camera: the XS and XS Max both have a dual 12MP wide angle and telephoto setup, while the XR has the more conventional single 12MP camera. This means the XS and XS Max can utilise a more sophisticated zoom (2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom, in comparison to the 5x digital zoom for the XR) and has a greater array of portrait lighting modes. All three phones get Natural, Studio, and Contour lighting, but you’ll have to pay that premium for the Stage and Stage Mono effects. However, the XR still gets you the impressive portrait mode that Apple’s iPhone X was noted for, including the bokeh effect that changed the depth of field in your photos. Smart HDR, which apparently gets you better highlight and shadow detail in your photos, is also included no matter which new iPhone you decide on. The 7MP front facing camera is the same across all models too, so your Animoji antics are safe. Memory games Apps are getting bigger, photos are snapped more often, and there are more shows to download now than ever before – so you’re going to need a phone with a good deal of memory. The XS, XS Max, and XR all start at a 64GB capacity, but the XS models then jump up to 256GB and 512GB (the highest an iPhone has gone yet). The XR, meanwhile, is also available in 128GB and 256GB. While bigger is better, it’s not necessarily best – depending on how you use your phone. The default 5GB of Cloud storage that comes with every iCloud account is laughably small, but some might want to pay Apple’s subscription fees to get 50GB, 200GB, or 2TB of storage (with the latter two able to be shared with your family). If you’re not married to Apple’s software ecosystem, you could also back up all your photos to Google Photos, which offers unlimited storage – albeit at a slightly lower resolution. Similarly, those with a good data plan could save space by streaming their music, rather than keeping it downloaded. Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, Tidal, and Deezer will all be there for you when you run out of space on your phone. For a price, of course. Making a splash Summer pool parties might be missed, but if you like taking your phone underwater on holiday or fear dropping it a particularly deep puddle water resistance should be on your mind. There’s only a meter difference between the iPhone XR and the iPhone XS: the former will withstand a drenching up to one meter for 30 minutes, while the XS’s can go down to two meters. It's a rich man's world It may be obvious, but when buying new tech you shouldn’t exceed your budget, so for some it will simply come down to pure price. The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max is £999 and £1,099, respectively, for the 64GB model. For the XS, its 256GB model is priced at £1149 and £1349 for the 512GB option. The bigger XS Max is £1249 for the 256GB model, and a boggling £1,449 at 512GB. £2000 smartphones come 2020, anyone?
