Google is launching a new feature for some Android smartphones called Google Assistant Ambient Mode. There's no blog post about it, though, just a short video on YouTube showing off this new lock screen experience. As Ars Technica reports, Google decided not to write a blog post regarding the introduction of this new Ambient Mode, which seems to be because it won't be available on the company's own Pixel devices. Instead, we have the video included below introducing the feature, which will be available for Sony Xperia, Nokia, Transsion, and Xiaomi phones, as well as two Lenovo tablets (Smart Tab M8 HD and Yoga Smart Tab) as long as they are running Android 8.1 or newer. What Google is attempting to do here is offer the most relevant information and functionality quickly and easily while your phone is tethered to a location and charging. Google Assistant Product Manager Arvind Chandrababu describes it in the video as, "moving from an app-based way of doing things to an intent based way of doing things." Ars has confirmed that your intent needs to match Google's because Ambient Mode isn't configurable. It will automatically show what Google thinks are the most important calendar, weather, and notification entries as well as access to any smart home controls you have linked to your phone or tablet. There's also a photo frame mode and do-not-disturb option available to tap. Using Ambient Mode not only requires one of the devices Google is supporting and Android 8.1 or newer, but you'll also need the latest version of Google Search installed and Voice Match activated, which means linking your voice to your device through Google Assistant. Enabling Ambient Mode isn't exactly intuitive. Open the Google Search app on a supported device, then navigate to More -> Settings -> Google Assistant -> Assistant tab -> Phone -> Assistant devices -> Ambient Mode and check the box.
