pcmag.com(Photo: Shamook/YouTube) Lucasfilm's Industrial Light and Magic has hired popular deepfake YouTuber "Shamook" to clean up its big-budget CGI effects. The artist, whose video improving the look of a young Mark Hamill in The Mandalorian season two finale went viral, snagged a job as Senior Facial Capture Artist with ILM/Lucasfilm "a few months ago.""[I] haven't had the time to work on any new YouTube content," Shamook wrote in a comment on their latest deepfake—Robert Pattinson as Batman. "Now I've settled into my job, uploads should start increasing again. They'll still be slow, but hopefully not months apart."Lucasfilm confirmed the news to IndieWire, adding that the company is "always on the lookout for talented artists." "Over the past several years ILM has been investing in both machine learning and AI as a means to produce compelling visual effects work," a representative said in a statement. "And it's been terrific to see momentum building in this space as the technology advances."Shamook has deepfaked everyone from Tom Holland (in the 2004 Spider-Man) and Charlize Theron (as Captain Marvel) to John Krasinski (as Mr. Fantastic and Captain America) and Burt Reynolds (replacing Sean Connery as James Bond in Dr. No).Since dropping their first video—Will Smith as Neo in The Matrix—in September 2019, Shamook has attracted tens of millions of views. Aside from The Mandalorian fix, which garnered 2.1 million views, the artist's most popular clip is a deepfake of Harrison Ford in SoloSolo. Shamook also went viral with a rendition of The IrishmanThe Irishman, which arguably de-aged Robert DeNiro better than VFX studio ILM.
