A Swedish software engineer has discovered a flaw in the Home Office smartphone app which stopped him changing his status from 'pre-settled' to 'settled', and could possibly hold up his application for citizenship in August. As reported by The Guardian, Hugo Nilsson came to the UK in July 2014 and was therefore eligible to apply for settled status this month. Currently, Nilsson has gained 'pre-settled' status, which is a label created by the government for those that had been in the country for fewer than five years but would remain in the country for longer, thereby getting 'settled status'. However, when trying to change his status from 'pre-settled' to 'settled', Nilsson found that the function was not available in the app, and that the support team for the app did not know when it would be available. Nilsson says that the flaw could postpone his application to stay in Britain, at a time when there is great political uncertainty already about how Britain is going to leave the European Union on the 31st of October - a delay from the original leaving date of 29 March 2019, which was then pushed back again to the 12 April 2019. A government spokesperson told The Guardian that Nilsson is "one of almost 700,000 people who have already secured status through the EU Settlement Scheme. From the end of July, it will be possible for people with pre-settled status to convert to settled status as soon as they become eligible.” This is not the first time that the government has faced criticism over the digital tools it has provided to EU citizens looking to stay in the UK after Brexit: in November last year, it was discovered that iPhone users could not scan the chip in their biometric passports because of well-known NFC (Near Field Communication) restrictions Apple places on its iPhones. Citizens were forced to use an Android smartphone to scan their passport, or post their passport to the UK Visa and Immigration Service. Apple is reportedly making the feature available to the Home Office this autumn to assist EU citizens with iPhones.
