The Kodak Cherish F685 ($84.99) is an indoor security camera that offers a nice assortment of features at a reasonable price, including mechanical pan and tilt, local and cloud video storage, and motion and sound detection. It delivered sharp video in our tests and is easy to install, but its pan and tilt movement is sluggish and it doesn't interact with other smart devices like our similarly priced Editors' Choice, the D-Link Full HD Wi-Fi Camera DCS-8300LH. Design and Features The F685 sports a unique right angle design that resembles the top of a periscope. The cylindrical black enclosure measures 4.9 by 2.5 (HW) and is equipped with two swivel mechanisms that provide 360 degrees of pan and tilt maneuverability, controlled using the swiping gestures on your phone or tablet. There's an LED indicator on the base that glows solid blue when the camera is first powered on, blinks blue when trying to connect to the network, glows solid red when the battery is charging, and blinks red and blue when the camera is in pairing mode. The base also contains a microSD slot (card not included), a Wi-Fi antenna, a USB power jack, and a microphone. The camera is designed to stand upright on a flat surface but has mounting slots on the bottom of the base for attaching the camera to a wall. Also on the bottom is a pairing button and an on/off button. The F685 uses a 1080p camera with a 120-degree field of view and a 32-foot focal range. It uses eight infrared LEDs for night vision (up to 16 feet), has a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi radio for connecting to your home network, and contains a built-in rechargeable battery that will give you up to 5 hours of untethered mobility should you want to move the camera from room to room. In addition to motion and sound detection, the F685 supports two-way audio and is equipped with temperature and humidity sensors. A speaker is located on the opposite end of the camera arm. You can store motion- and sound-triggered video locally using a microSD card or in the cloud. The Free plan gets you storage for the past 24 hours of video for an unlimited number of cameras. and the $2.99 per month Silver plan gets you seven days of storage for up to four cameras. For $4.99 per month, the Gold plan lets you store video for the past 14 days for up to four cameras, and the $9.99 Platinum plan gets you 30 days of storage for up to four cameras. You can manage the F685 and view live and recorded video using the mobile app for Android and iOS devices. It opens to a Dashboard screen with a tab for each installed camera, the camera name, and the last captured image. Tap the camera image to launch a live stream with the current temperature and humidity readings. Below the feed is a timeline of video clips recorded when the camera has detected sound or motion. Tap any clip to view the video, save it, share it, or delete it. To view video in full-screen mode, turn your phone sideways. Tap the orange circle with three dots to bring up buttons for two-way talk, taking a photo, manually recording video, and muting the speaker. Camera settings can be accessed by tapping the gear icon in the lower right corner of the video screen. Here you can turn on night vision, motion detection, and sound detection, adjust motion and sound sensitivity (Low, Medium, High), and set motion alert zones. There's also a setting for enabling alerts when the room temperature hits certain high and low thresholds. Tap the three-bar icon in the upper left corner to edit your user Profile, adjust Dashboard settings, select temperature units (Celsius, Fahrenheit), and access online help and support. Installation and Performance I had the Cherish F685 camera up and running in a matter of minutes. I started by downloading the app and creating an account, then tapped Add New Device. I selected the F685 and followed the on-screen instructions to plug in the camera and move the switch to the On position. When the LED began blinking blue, I pressed the Pair button and held it for three seconds until I heard a beep. I pressed Continue, went to my phone's Wi-Fi settings to connect the phone to the camera, and entered my Wi-Fi password (the camera uses the same Wi-Fi as the phone). I waited 15 seconds for the camera to join my network, updated the firmware, gave the camera a name, and the installation was finished. The F685 delivered sharp 1080p video with good color quality in testing. Black-and-white night vision video was also sharp, with good contrast and uniform lighting. Sound and motion alerts arrived quickly, as did recorded video clips, and two-way audio was loud and clean. Motion and sound detection worked well, but I had to lower the sensitivity setting for both to Low to avoid false alerts. Temperature alerts also worked as advertised. My only performance gripe has to do with the mechanical pan and tilt feature. Its movement is sluggish and not quite as smooth as we saw with the Kami Indoor Camera. Conclusions For $85, the Kodak Cherish F685 packs some nice features into its unique-looking frame including a 1080p CMOS sensor, mechanical pan and tilt, sound and motion detection, and a microSD card slot for local video storage. It delivers high-quality video and both the sound and motion detection features work well, but pan and tilt action is a little sluggish. It's a nice little standalone camera for the money, but it doesn't support Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice commands, and it doesn't interact with other smart home devices like our Editors' Choice, the $90 D-Link Full HD Wi-Fi Camera DCS-8300LH. Kodak Cherish F685 Smart Home Security Camera Bottom Line: The Kodak Cherish F685 is a unique-looking home security camera that delivers a number of useful features for a good price, but it doesn't work with other smart devices and its pan and tilt movement is a bit choppy.
