Xbox One X If you want to experience 4K gaming for under £500, Xbox One X is the perfect choice. It’s the world’s most powerful console, serving up true 4K gaming at a fraction of the price of a similar spec PC. There’s great 4K support in the games line-up too, with Forza Motorsport 7 and Assassin’s Creed Origins both looking absolutely gorgeous. PlayStation 4 Pro While Sony’s 4K console doesn’t quite match the power of the Xbox One X, you can get it for almost £200 cheaper if you shop around. It’s also been out for a lot longer, so there are more games that take advantage of the extra grunt, including Horizon: Zero Dawn and Destiny 2. It’s also the best console to go for if you’re interest in virtual reality, thanks to PlayStation VR. Turtle Beach Elite Pro Headset and Amp If you take gaming seriously then this headset is for you. It’s super comfortable, thanks to large, soft ear cups that, cleverly, can adjust to accommodate glasses – meaning lengthy gaming sessions can be enjoyed by everyone. The separate amp enables you to alter the audio mix too, increasing the volume of enemy footsteps to give you a competitive advantage. Yes, they’re expensive, but if you spend hours playing games then they’re totally worth it. ASUS GX501VI ROG Zephyrus This 15.6-inch gaming laptop is a beast. Better still, even though it’s as powerful as a desktop gaming PC, it’s as light and portable as an ultrabook, so you really can play the latest high-end games anywhere. PlayStation VR PS VR is the most affordable way to experience virtual reality especially if you already have a PS4. While the headset isn’t quite as technically advanced as some of its more expensive competitors, it’s no slouch and the experiences it offers are truly memorable – putting on the Dark Knight’s cowl in Batman: Arkham VR is a moment Bat fans will never forget, and piloting an X-Wing in Battlefront VR is a must for anyone with opening day tickets to The Last Jedi. There’s a new version coming out too – the CUH-ZVR1 - which offers a number of minor enhancements over the original and is priced the same. It’s completely customisable and comes with a selection of precision-engineered D-pads and thumbsticks to ensure the best fit and maximum comfort. The pad configuration can be changed further thanks to detachable paddles that fit underneath, enabling you to assign face button controls to your fingers, to free up your thumbs. DropMix DropMix is a card-based music game from the creators of Rock Band and it’s quite unlike anything else we’ve played. Available on iOS and Android, the game comes with a game board onto which you place chip-enabled cards, which represent different parts of a song, from bass, percussion vocals and so on. By layering the cards you create band new mixes of familiar tracks. The game comes with 60 cards to get you started, plus more are available to expand your playlist.
