Last week it was reported that Apple had to redesign the next MacBook thanks to Intel deciding to delay 10nm processors until 2019. That new MacBook is meant to clear up any confusion as to whether consumers should buy a MacBook or MacBook Air. However, it looks as though we're going to get a new MacBook Air, too. As Bloomberg reports, the MacBook Air refresh will see the bezels around the 13-inch display get much thinner and it will finally be Retina resolution. Beyond that, Apple is expected to keep the Air as the company's cheapest laptop, it may get even cheaper, so don't expect a laptop that can compete with the MacBook, let alone the MacBook Pro in terms of performance. The core market for the new MacBook Air is as a laptop for schools. Then we have the Mac mini, which is desperately in need of a hardware refresh. The mini has always been the cheapest way to experience a Mac, costing as little as $500. But for that you currently get a 1.4GHz Core i5 with Intel HD 5000 Graphics, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive. Apple's refresh of the Mac mini later this year is expected to focus on appealing to professional users. That means more processor and storage options, and hopefully the ability to order a tiny powerhouse for the home or server farm. As with all things Apple, though, don't expect the higher end Mac mini to be cheap. They may start at $500, but you currently pay $1,000 for the top-end model and that's before you add an SSD or more than 8GB of RAM. As usual, Apple isn't commenting, but the rumors and predictions about product refreshes have been quite accurate over the past few years. So hopefully before 2018 is over we have a MacBook Air and Mac mini worth considering buying again, rather than the ancient products they are right now.
