Mobile network Vodafone will launch its 5G service on July 3 in seven UK cities: Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, and London. Vodafone will start selling its first 5G smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G, on May 23. Later this month, it will start taking pre-orders for the Samsung S10 5G and Huawei Mate 20 X (5G). This summer, Vodafone will add the the foldable Huawei Mate X (5G) and a 5G home router, the 5G Gigacube, to its lineup. If customers decide to purchase any of these smartphones before the 5G launch, the devices will run on Vodafone's 4G network until the switchover in July. Vodafone also confirmed that there will be no change in price between 5G and 4G, for both businesses and consumers, although actual device prices were not announced. Notably absent from the list of phones is the Samsung Galaxy Fold, which is launching exclusively with the mobile carrier EE in the UK. However, it is unclear when the smartphone will be available due to the recent string of breakages and Samsung's recall of its review units. By the end of the year, Vodafone plans to extend 5G service to Birkenhead, Blackpool, Bournemouth, Guildford, Newbury, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Reading, Southampton, Stoke-on-Trent, and Warrington—with free 5G roaming in Germany, Italy, and Spain. While the UK might be lagging behind the US with regards to the rollout of 5G, it does seem to be getting a better deal. In the US, Verizon launched its 5G network in Chicago and Minneapolis in early April, but its coverage is limited and its range needs improving. In addition, Verizon is charging $10 extra for unlimited, never-deprioritized 5G data (even if the first three months are free because the network isn't truly ready) while the UK gets it at no extra cost.
