computerworld.comMicrosoft on Saturday issued an out-of-band Windows security update that disabled a patch the company released earlier this month to protect personal computers from possible attacks leveraging one of the "Spectre" vulnerabilities. The weekend release was Microsoft's response to an announcement seven days ago by Intel, which told customers of all stripes - from computer makers to end users - to stop deploying the firmware updates it had offered after disclosures of the Spectre and Meltdown flaws. According to Intel, the new firmware "may introduce [a] higher-than-expected [number of] reboots and other unpredictable system behavior" on Broadwell and Haswell processors. computerworld.comIn the digital age, attention is everything. One decade since the iPhone, the average adult American now spends almost three hours each day on their smartphone. What does Apple get out of this?Attention deficit I discussed smartphone addiction with TechNightOwl recently. This set me off thinking. What does Apple want this attention for? You see, we know Google turns attention into advertising revenue, and we know Facebook turns attention into ads and social conditioning, including the capacity (some might say) of enabling elections to be sold to those with the deepest pockets. To read this article in full, please click here...

computerworld.comAs we crawl deeper down the Meltdown/Spectre bunny hole, Microsoft released on Friday night a weird, download-only patch that disables the “fix” that’s supposed to protect you against one of the Spectre variants. It’s the same patch, that works the same way, on every version of Windows, from Win7 to the latest Win10 beta builds.I’m tempted to call it an out-of-band patch, but truth is that all of this month’s patches have been out of band. You’ve no doubt been inundated by the news about Meltdown and Spectre, the two (actually, three) highly publicized security vulnerabilities in essentially all modern computer chips that, at this point, has never been seen on a real, live, in-the-wild computer. computerworld.comThis IT department has a resident bully who doesn't hesitate to snipe at his co-workers -- including one he probably shouldn't be poking at, according to a pilot fish on the scene."Barney was a programming superstar," says fish. "He had a Ph.D. in astrophysics and had written articles on superstring theory and other cosmology problems. The man was brilliant as well as hard working. He'd routinely work 60 to 70 hours on a difficult programming problem. He saved the day on more than one occasion."Fred, on the other hand, was a good programmer but harassed other people in the department on a daily basis. When Barney had finally had enough of Fred's snotty, petulant, nasty remarks, he went to the director. Barney gave the director an ultimatum: 'Either Fred goes, or I go.'To read this article in full, please click here...
